Plan, plan, plan

Sadly, telling you to plan doesn’t change the fact I didn’t plan well enough. My potatoes are growing and looking great! There are some tomato, bean, and other small plants growing in tiny pots, but otherwise my huge gardens are empty. I blame myself for not planning better.

Wednesday my husband had surgery, the same day I had 12 cubic feet of soil delivered to the driveway… this is not a good combination. (On a side note, I started a second blog on PKD and my journey as a wife of a man with kidney failure.) My thought was either I could move it all myself or that my husband would be better in a day or two and could help me. I found out after the surgery that it will be about 8 weeks before he can help me, which is too late since that will put me in the middle of the growing season and won’t allow enough time for my veggies to grow.

I have been working for 3 days, as many hours as possible, while still taking care of Hubby, my children, and all my other chores. I’m beat. I have a good layer in the garden bed, but then it occurred to me that because I put a weed protection sheet down, that I will have to make sure there is enough soil for the roots of the veggies I plan to plant. Tonight’s plan? Sit down with my seeds, figure out good companion planting while keeping with plants that have small roots. I have two beds that don’t have weed protection and sadly it shows. One is for potatoes, the other is for more potatoes, onions, radishes, and possibly some other root veggies.

I think I was a bit ambitious this year, 4 garden beds that are 7ft by 10ft, 2 that are my daughter’s which are about 4ft by 4ft, and then I will have one more small one that is for all my herbs, which will also be about 4ft by 4ft. It is a lot for just one person, which my daughter working on hers, but I’m determined to make it work.

Pictures coming soon!
